This 52-acre park is located south of Hackbarth Road and west of Hwy K, just west of the new Alpine Meadows subdivision. The park has a pond, an ephemeral pond, a tall and short grass prairie, and a woods, with part being restored to a bur oak savanna. Built between 300 and 1642 AD, these effigy mounds were constructed by the nomadic tribes that populated the area. The park contains a group of 11 animal, bird, and conical mounds, as well as a section of an old Indian trail. The park is located south of Fort Atkinson on Koshkonong Mounds Road and offers visitors five acres of woods to hike through to view all of the effigy mounds. Cycle the scenic Glacial River Bike Trail on this mostly paved converted rail bed. Open year-round, this 31.5-mile bike trail passes by farmsteads, bronze sculptures, prairie flowers, woods, over streams, and through a rustic, red covered bridge.
Lake Koshkonong is a naturally occuring lake, but its size was increased by the creation of the Indianford Dam in 1932 — making it one of the larger lakes in the state. This shallow lake is ideal for fishing, canoeing, pontoon boats and small water craft. The lake is also home to around 60 species of fish, including musky, large and small mouth bass, northern pike, walleye, catfish, and panfish.
The Rock River flows through the northern part of the township and into Lake Koshkonong. The Rock River Water Trail is part of the National Water Trails System and is the first of its kind in Wisconsin. The Rock River is great for boating, fishing, and water recreation.
The Bark River is a tribuatary of the Rock River and joins the Rock River just east of Fort Atkinson. Though, much smaller, this quiet, winding river serves as a wonderful place for canoeing and kayaking — as well as an ideal place for fishing.
Located 2 miles west of Fort Atkinson off of Hwy 12, Pilgrim's Campground is a clean, quiet family campground. They offer daily, weekly and seasonal camping, including tent sites. They also have a pool, playground and open space that provides activities for all.
