All controlled burns or open fires require notification of the sheriff’s office. The only fires that do not require a notification are when you burn rubbish in a barrel, trash can, or other enclosed burner, AND the container has a heavy screen or cover to prevent burning materials or embers from escaping or contained-type recreational campfires. Jefferson County Sheriff: +1 920-674-7310 It is no longer necessary to contact a board supervisor or town hall and the notification to Jefferson County Sheriff’s acts as proper notification of burning.
You are not allowed to burn:
If the fire department is called the property owner will be billed $800 for a fire department response, regardless of whether prior burning authorization had been received or $200 for fire department service call charge (example: gas leak, faulty CO detector going off). Burning without a permit could also result in a fine. You may want to contact your insurance agent to make sure you have coverage to pay the $800 charge.
